Sapphire
Sapphire, the birthstone of September, a stone said to inspire creativity and intuition. Since ancient times, sapphires were said to represent the purity of the soul. It was believed that the stones colour would darken if worn by an adulterer or adulteress or by an unworthy person.

Most sapphires are blue, from light blue to a deep indigo, but are also available in pink, yellow, green, and white.

Ruby
Ruby, the birthstone for July, is one of the best gemstones for jewellery setting, second only to diamond in hardness. Rubies come in many shades of red, from pinkish to purplish brown and symbolise love, enthusiasm and strength.

Emerald
The emerald is the birthstone of May and traditionally symbolises fidelity, goodness and love. Emeralds were mined in the Cleopatra emerald mines in Egypt as early as 2000BC and are considered by many as the most beautiful of all the coloured gemstones. Today fine rich velvety green emeralds are extremely rare.

Opal
Opal, the birthstone of October, derives its name from the Latin word ‘opalus’, meaning precious jewel. Prized for its unique ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light, ancient monarchs treasured Opals, both for their beauty and their protective powers. They were set in crowns and necklaces to ward off evil and to protect eyesight. These gemstones were also ground and ingested for their healing properties and to ward off nightmares!

A gift of Opal is symbolic of faithfulness and confidence.

The black opal is the most prized opal as it refracts light into a spectrum of startlingly vibrant colours. Besides black, there are two other varieties of opal, boulder opal and white opal. Do come and visit our showroom to view our selection of opal jewellery or commission us to design a piece of jewellery with your favourite stone.

Pearls
Pear is the birth gem for June, representing peace, nobility and beauty. At David Dudley we stock exquisite pearl jewellery set with pearls from the finest cultivators in Japan, Tahiti and the South Seas.
